JEE – JEE (joint entrance exam) as the name itself says Joint which means entrance examination for admission to different engineering courses.
JEE Mains is conducted for students who wish to get into BE or B.Tech courses in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), other Centrally have Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) and engineering colleges of the participating states. Whereas JEE Advanced is for students who wish to get into Indian Institutes of Technology(IIT) and Indian School of Mines (ISM) situated at Dhanbad.
On the other hand,
Institutes like the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science which use the JEE Advanced score for admission in their respective colleges.
The JEE Mains exam is conducted by CBSE and on the other hand JEE Advanced is conducted by IITs.
JEE Mains qualified students get at least 1.5 months to prepare for JEE Advanced, so they are advised to go through the given syllabus.
It is very important for every student to know the difference in preparation of both the exams (IIT JEE Mains and IIT JEE Advanced).
Talking about difficulty
JEE advanced is more difficult than JEE Mains as Advanced focuses on analytical and problem solving skills of students.
Students who have appeared or appearing for intermediate exams can appear for JEE Main whereas to appear for Advanced, students have to clear Mains exam with certain cut off.
There is a difference in preparation because syllabus is different for both the exams. For this, students should be thorough or well versed with class 11th and class 12th syllabus.
Subjects included are PCM, whereas the topics differ for both the exams.
First of all, I would like to tell you the main point in preparation is students should be thorough with the topics for both the exams. As the preparation will be solely based on what topics you are focusing on.

- Mains – kinematics, law of motion, work, energy and power, rotational motion, gravitation, properties of solids and liquids, thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases, Oscillations and waves, Electronic Devices, current electricity, magnetic effect of current and magnetism, electromagnetic induction and alternating currents, optics, dual nature of matter and radiation, atoms and nuclei, Electrostatics, Electromagnetic Waves and Communication Systems and Experimental sicilis.
- Advanced – General Physics, Mechanics, Thermal Physics, Electricity and Magnetism, Optics & Modern Physics.
- Mains – Detail about Physical chemistry, Inorganic chemistry and Organic chemistry.
- Advanced – Electrochemistry and Nuclear Chemistry
- Mains – Sets, Relations and Functions, complex numbers and quadratic equations, Matrices, permutations and combination, Mathematical induction, Binomial theorem and its simple applications, Sequences and series, integral calculus, Differential equations, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry, vector algebra, three dimensional geometry, co- ordinate geometry, and Mathematical Reasoning
- Advanced – Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytical geometry, differential calculus, integral calculus and vectors.
Note:- Topics given above are just the headers.
JEE main rank is based on combination of JEE main marks and marks in board exams. Whereas for JEE Advanced, rank is solely based on performance in JEE Advance exam.
