The current system of about 8,500 teacher education institutes (TEIs) is way too fragmented and is littered with poor quality and suspect institutes. As a next step, we must ensure that the most motivated and talented candidates are selected. The teacher recruitment and selection must be online and transparent and should be informed by core competencies such as knowledge, skills and mindsets. Further, like all professionals, teachers must engage in continuous professional development, linked to career progression. The current cascade model of in-service training is completely broken and so we need to leverage technology to deliver standardised blended training at scale. More
